The Charm of Nishiki-e Prints, circa 1930s - Terrific modern portrait of a young girl holding a doll, her hair pulled back into a large bun adorned with tied-dyed ribbons, a lacquer comb, and a floral ornament. Interestingly, the background features two nishiki-e or color woodblock prints from Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" series. The young woman's large eyes were a hallmark of designs by Jun'ichi Nakahara, whose work prefigured modern manga. Nakahara was a well-known illustrator and fashion designer who did many covers for women's magazines, and published his own shojo (young woman) magazine called "Himawari" from 1947 - 1952. A great subject for a collector interested in manga. This design is printed on paper with an allover slightly bumpy texture. Please note, this is an offset lithograph print, not a woodblock.
