Courtesans from the Three Capitals

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Lovely image featuring full-length portraits of renowned courtesans from Osaka, Kyoto, and Edo, each dressed and coiffed according to the style of her city. The black areas of the kimono are rendered with a shiny black pigment to simulate lacquer, with the folds outlined in embossing. Detailed with a dusting of metallic gold in other areas such as the curtain. Beautifully drawn with graceful flowing lines. A terrific design from the early years of color woodblock prints when color was applied by hand.

Artist - Kiyomasu II (active 1716 - 1736)

Image Size - 13" x 19"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Please see photos for details. Very nice overall.
