Koshikibu no Naishi by Sugimura Jihei (active circa 1681 - 1703)

Sugimura Jihei (active circa 1681 - 1703) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Koshikibu no Naishi

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Lovely portrait of the poet Koshikibu no Naishi visiting a Tenmangu Shrine. A verse by the Heian era beauty was included in the famous anthology "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets." Here, she moves gracefully across the floor while looking up as a votive plaque overhead. Drawn with fluid linework, this reprint is hand-colored just like the original. A charming image from the early years of Japanese woodblock prints, in an extra large format that would make an attractive display.

Artist - Sugimura Jihei (active circa 1681 - 1703)

Image Size - 23 1/8" x 13"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two attached panels. A few creases at edges. Folded by publisher for storage, will be shipped folded or rolled. Please see photos for details.
