Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Shikiutsushi tosa-e no futsutsuka." The warrior monk Benkei, loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, is astonished by the appearance of the ghost of Taira no Tomomori, who committed suicide after his defeat by Yoshitsune at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. His angry spirit returned to haunt his conquerors and he is shown at left, calmly gripping a naginata as he stares at his enemy. Benkei thrusts his hands forward clasping a string of prayer beads, praying for assistance against this evil apparition. His face is contorted in a grimace and he hunches forward, his body tensed. Tomomori wears a white headband with golden horns attached, his long hair flowing loosely over his shoulders. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII and Ichikawa Ebizo V. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and soft color, the figures set off by a softly shaded gray background.
