Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Kintoki and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Yamauba, 1848

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait featuring Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Kintoki (Kaidomaru) and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as his mother, Yamauba in the play "Takigi Oyukima no Ichikawa." Kintoki had incredible strength as a child, and was raised in the mountains, where he learned to communicate with animals. Here, the boy looks up at Yamauba with a frown as he holds purple and white striped sashes. She stares over her shoulder with a wary expression, a drum in one hand. Nice large figures set against a softly shaded background.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 5/8" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, a couple holes, repaired. Slight rubbing and a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details.
