Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The Seven Lucky Gods in Their Treasure Ship, 1890

Comments - Charming depiction of the Seven Lucky Gods sailing in in their takarabune or treasure ship at New Year's, with a fierce dragon as the prow. Bishamonten, the God of War, stands in the center gripping a pole arm in one hand and a miniature pagoda in the other, a red sash fluttering around his head. Just below, Ebisu holds a fishing pole with a red snapper thrashing about at the end of the line. At lower right, a turtle with long moss flowing from its shell, a symbol of longevity, bobs to the surface of the water. A crane flies overhead as the sun rises, sending rays of light radiating across the sky. A border of auspicious objects, like coral branches and gold money surrounds the image. An attractive illustration of these beloved deities.
