Series; Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern

Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern - Handsome design from Toyokuni III's series "Biographies of Famous Women, Ancient and Modern" (Kokin meifu den), originally designed around the early 1860s. Each print features a renowned woman from Japanese history or legend, from the poets Ono no Komachi and Sei Shonagon, to the legendary woman warrior Tomoe Gozen and Princess Matsu-ura Sayohime, who turned to stone while waiting for her husband to return from Korea. A charming series, beautifully detailed.

1918 Yoshikawa Kobunkan Reprint - Beautifully carved and printed, these reprints come from a 1918 edition published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan of Tokyo. Originals from this series are difficult to find, so these fine Taisho era prints are offer a nice chance to collect a classic Toyokuni III beauty subject.
