Comments - Great kabuki scene from the story of Shirai Gonpachi, who was wanted for the murder of his uncle. While pausing during his travels, Gonpachi encountered a gang trying to capture him for the reward. Here, he wrestles one attacker to the ground, twisting him by the arm and the man's leg flails in the air. At right, the famous otokodate Banzui Chobei, who had also stopped for a rest, watches the fight with an angry frown, his hands tucked inside the sleeves of his boldly patterned coat. A lantern hangs from a pine tree at right, with undulating waves along the shore beyond. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Ichikawa Ebizo V. A lively design with a handsome setting.
