Emperor's Procession, 1868

Comments - Handsome view of the Meiji Emperor's procession winding its way through Tokyo on the way to the castle. The emperor rides in an elegant palanquin topped with a golden phoenix, hidden from view by fine reed blinds. Noblemen in court dress accompany him on foot with a couple riders on horseback following behind. At lower left, townspeople bow respectfully as they watch the long procession pass. An interesting historic subject.
