These beautiful images bring the history and legends of
Minamoto no Yorimitsu on Mt. Oe, No. 12 - Terrific scene from the legendary tale of the Demon of Oeyama, the horrible Shuten-doji, who kidnapped young beauties and held them hostage in his lair on Mt. Oe near Kyoto. The great warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) was asked to get rid of this terrible monster. Here, he and his four loyal retainers, known as the "Four Heavenly Kings," peer down from a rocky cliff at two of the captive women washing clothes in a rushing mountain stream. One woman looks up with a smile to see the men, her sleeves tied back and her kimono tucked up out of the way. The inset above shows the warriors attacking the sleeping demon after having plied him with sake. A wonderful depiction of this classic story, with beautiful embossed detail on the white kimono.
