Onoe Kikugoro as the Spirit of the Priest Koyo, 1875

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Onoe Kikugoro as the spirit of the priest Koyo appearing to a beauty and a samurai in the woods. He stands at right with his hands tucked into his sleeves and holding a string of prayer beads, his blue lips a sign of his otherworldliness and a supernatural flame dancing in the sky behind him. The beauty leans forward with an eager smile, but she conceals a sickle behind her back. Her companion watches with an angry frown, wearing a black kimono with a burnished pattern. The actor in the center is Sawamura Tossho. A great image with an atmospheric setting among the tree trunks.
