Nisaburo Ito - Born in Kyoto in 1910, shin-hanga artist Nisaburo Ito created many woodblock prints of flowers, landscapes, and noted shrines and temples around his hometown. Some of his designs reflect his study of nihonga or traditional Japanese painting, while others take on a more modern expression. His floral and nature subjects are beautifully rendered with wonderful color and attention to detail. His attractive prints are a lovely choice to collect or display.
Peony under Snow - Attractive image of a peony protected from a late spring snow by a covering of straw. The pink and white blossoms provide a colorful accent against the snow. This print is from the archives of the Uchida Art Company of Kyoto. It is a black key block print that has hand coloring added, likely as a sample for the finished woodblock design. A rare and unusual item.
