Iwafuji Berating Onoe - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Kagamiyama Kokyo no Nishiki-e." Iwafuji, a senior lady-in waiting, plots the downfall of Onoe, a junior lady-in-waiting, by substituting a zori sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. When the sandal is discovered, Iwafuji publicly beats and humiliates Onoe, who decides to commit suicide. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the zori sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring at the meek Onoe, who looks up at her with a slightly bewildered smile. Fantastic architectural detail in the perspective view of the room behind them. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and burnishing on the black lacquer trim of the screen at right.
