A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Fujiya Restaurant, 1852 - Handsome portrait of Onoe Matsuroku I as Tsubone Iwafuji in the famous drama "Kagamiyama Moto-no-nishikie." A senior lady-in-waiting, the jealous Iwafuji caused the suicide of her junior Onoe by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. She looks over her shoulder with a sinister scowl, one handed tucked inside her obi. She wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric and floral pattern and carries an umbrella, her hair pulled back into a matronly style, simply adorned with one hairpin. The inset by Hiroshige above show the beautiful coast of Susaki, with white sails dotting the calm blue water, with a vignette of shells on the beach at left. A great image from this classic play, with fine detail in the hair and embossing on the white kimono collar and trim.
