Comments - Handsome triptych depicting the beauty Shizuka Gozen rushing into her lover Yoshitsune's room at Horikawa Palace as forces arrive to attack him on the orders of his brother, Yoritomo, with whom he has been fighting. He sits up in bed, holding a suit of armor in one hand and gripping his sword with the other. The woman hurries barefoot towards the open doorway, her arms outstretched to bid him a last goodbye. She wears a flowing kimono patterned with grasses and floral motifs, some in silver mica. A lacquer chest rests on the floor next to her with the lid leaning against the side. Beyond the verandah railing, banners flutter in the evening sky under a softly glowing moon. A lovely image, beautifully drawn. Nicely detailed with embossing on the samurai's white robe and the beauty's white under robe, burnishing on the chest, armor, lamp stand, and the black lacquer frame of the shoji panel at upper left. An attractive design.
