The Suicide of Enya Hangan, 1858

Comments - Poignant image from the famous play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura," of Lord Enya Hangan preparing to commit suicide after being goaded into attacked Lord Moronao at the shogun's palace, an offense punishable by death. He sits at right looking sadly over his shoulder at his retainer, Horibe Yasubei, who kneels at his side with a frown, angry that his master must kill himself because of Moronao's bad behavior. At lower right, a dirk rests atop a sheaf of papers on a tray. Nice expressive figures, detailed with embossing on Hangan's white outer robe.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14"x 19 1/2" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
