Onoe Kikugoro as Kimura Shigenari and Ichikawa Danjuro as His Mother, 1880

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Nanba senki" of the samurai Kimura Shigenari receiving a helmet from his mother. The young man leans forward with an angry grimace as he grabs hold of the helmet, glaring at he mother. The elderly woman stares back at him with a sober expression. Shigenari wears a fine suit of armor, his hair pulled back into a low ponytail over his shoulders. Oversized peony blossoms in red and yellow create a striking backdrop for the figures. A colorful design with large expressive figures.
