Garden Chrysanthemum: Sawamura Tanosuke III as Onzoshi Ushiwakamaru, 1861 - Handsome portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III as the young samurai Onzoshi Ushiwakamaru, who grows up to become the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. In the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the popular play "Kiichi Hogen Sanryaku no Maki," Ushiwakamaru disguises himself as a yakko or footman to join the household of the Heike general Yoshioka Kiichi in the hopes of obtaining his books of strategy. He looks over his shoulder with a slight smile, gripping the scabbard of his sword. He wears a gray outer robe with the distinctive crest of a yakko on the shoulder and arm. His red kimono is patterned with the paulownia symbol of the Genji, though. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, and faint embossing on the yakko crest and the white cord wrapped around his thick topknot. An attractive design from this rarely seen series.
