Ronin Tamiya Iemon with His Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law, 1848

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait from the play "Manete Mimasu yotsuya no kikigaki," a classic Japanese ghost story. At upper right, the ronin Tamiya Iemon holds a sword against his shoulder, frowning angrily. At left, his sworn enemy Sato Yomoshichi is also his brother-in-law, married to the beauty Osode, who peers coyly from beneath a heavy kimono below. She is the sister of Iemon's wife Oiwa, whom Iemon hates and watches die from poison only to be haunted by her ghost. The actors include Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Iemon Bando Shuka I as Osode. A nice composition with fine shading in the night sky.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 10" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. A few repairs, slight creasing, rubbed spot on face. Please see photos for details.
