Scene from Higashiyama Sakura Zoshi, 1851

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Higashiyama Sakura Zoshi" at the Nakamura Theater showing Murashoya Togo leaving his family during a snowstorm. A local mayor, he petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor, an act punishable by execution. His wife and children watch from the window of their home as he turns for a last look over his shoulder, lifting his straw hat high above his head, grimacing angrily. His wife holds their youngest child in her arms as the middle son perches on the frame of the window, their older boy watching nearby. The actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Murashoya Togo, Onoe Kikujiro II as his wife Omine, Seki Hanasuke IV as his first son Totaro, and Ichikawa Kumejiro as the second son Kunimatsu. A snowy winter landscape makes a lovely setting for this tender parting.
