Eleventh Month: All-star Performance at Saruwaka-cho, 1889 - Terrific view of beauties on an upper story verandah in the Saruwaka-cho theater district. A nearly life-size display on the roof of theater across the street advertises a kabuki performance, featuring a scene from the Soga Brothers' night attack at Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The three actors on the stage are Ichikawa Danjuro, Onoe Kikugoro, and Iwai Hanshiro. Straw-wrapped barrels of sake are stacked at left, with colorful red paper lanterns and decorations lining the eaves below the display. The street is crowded with pedestrians eager to see the all-star performance. In the center, two of the beauties chat as they look over the railing, while at right, a woman cuddles a young girl. A lively, festive scene with wonderful detail. A great subject for a kabuki enthusiast.
