Comments - Attractive kabuki scene from the tale of two sisters who are reunited to avenge the death of their father. At left, the young sister Shinobu has traveled to Edo from her country home in search of her long-lost sister, who has become the beautiful courtesan Miyagino. After arriving at the Daikokuya brothel, she meets her sister and tells her the sad news that the samurai Shiga has killed their father, and the pair agree to immediately seek out the murderer. The proprietor Soroku overhears them, and at left, Shinobo is prepared to attack him with the knife behind her back if he tries to stop them. In the center, Soroku in waves a mirror in his outstretched hand, frowning angrily at the young beauty. At right, Miyagino looks up with a wary expression. Her red striped robe is bordered with a purple floral print and her hair is styled with many decorative hairpins and combs. Behind her, a blue kimono with a design of a dragon emerging from clouds in front of Mt. Fuji hangs over a black lacquer stand. An elegant chest with decorative ironwork stands at left beneath a shelf piled with robes. Wonderful detail in the interior setting. Includes burnishing on the black kimono collars and ironwork, and embossing on the white kimono collar.
