Scene from Matsu no Sakae Chiyoda no Shintoku, 1878

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Matsu no Sakae Chiyoda no Shintoku" of warriors on a boat, watching as a brilliant red setting sun sends rays of light radiating across the darkening sky. The boatman at left looks up with an unhappy frown as he leans on his oar. The man in the center lifts his hat above his head as he scans the sky. He wears a straw raincoat over a brocade robe and armor, his hair pulled back in a neat topknot tied with purple cord. The samurai at right pushes up the sleeve of his green kimono, his hat in hand and two swords at his side. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Onoe Kikugoro V. A bold design with large colorful figures and a striking natural setting.
