Taking Hold of a Sword, 1886

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the young samurai Genzaburo taking hold of the blade of a sword held by his companion, using a stack of tissues. His companion frowns worriedly as he extends the weapon, the beauty kneeling beside him looking up with a wary expression. In the center, the wall panels behind Genzaburo are decorated with irises beside a dock, and shelves at right hold lacquer boxes. In a separate scene divided diagonally a left, a courtesan strolls through a garden filled with blossoming, watching as two butterflies flit through the sky beneath colorful autumn maple leaves. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Aragoro, Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa [?], and Sawamura Tanosuke. A handsome design with attractive color, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono at right and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the sword and the courtesan's fan.
