A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

The Decorum of Gekiketsu, 1883 - Attractive scene of the poor farmer Gekiketsu and his wife treating each other respectfully as they take a meal under a tree at the side of a road. He sits on a straw mat, reaching for a dish of rice offered to him by his wife. A low red lacquer tray before him holds more food. At right, a Chinese minister on horseback watches silently, a retainer next to him holding a fluttering red flag trimmed with fringe. Impressed by the respect with which the pair treated each other, the minister told the king, who then appointed Gekiketsu to an important state position. A handsome composition with attractive detail and soft bokashi shading. A rare untrimmed print with full margins.
