The Chikuma River in Early Summer

Series; Ten Sights of Shinano, 1948

Ten Sights of Shinano - Best known as the leading shin-hanga designer of beauty portraits, Ito Shinsui also produced a number of beautiful landscape prints. These expressive images feature wide vistas and heightened color, along with energetic line work. After WWII, Shinsui left the ruined city of Tokyo for Komoro in Nagano Prefecture, the former Shinano Province. While there, he completed his "Ten Sights of Shinano," which was published by Watanabe in 1948. These attractive designs are excellent examples of Shinsui's handsome landscapes.

This Commemorative Edition - In 1997 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shinsui's birth, Watanabe issued a special edition of "Ten Sights in Shinano" from the original blocks, in a limited edition of 195 sets. Each set came with a folder featuring the edition number, although the prints are not individually numbered. The prints in this group are number 40/195 (see example below, not included). Original first edition impressions of these designs are quite rare. A great opportunity to acquire one of Shinsui's striking and rare landscape woodblocks.
