Comments - Terrific triptych illustrating the aftermath of the Battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180. Following his defeat, the great leader Minamoto no Yoritomo and his men have hidden themselves in the hollow trunk of a tree at upper left. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, diverts Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place. Kagetoki stands in front of the tree with a naginata in hand, pointing in the opposite direction. In the foreground, fighting continues with a warrior on horseback at right galloping over fallen samurai, raising his sword high above his head. Bodies are jumbled together on the ground amidst broken arrows and abandoned weapons. A great subject with a handsomely detailed natural setting.
