Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen." At right, the retired warrior Kiichi Hogen grimaces angrily, waving a pole threateningly above his head, his white hair flowing around his face. Kiichi fought for the Heike, but his family had alliances to the Genji. Having written three books on battle strategy, he was unsure who deserves to receive them, as members of both clans are interested in obtaining his secrets. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan, has joined his household in disguise as the servant Torazo to obtain the books. In the center his daughter Princess Minatsuru, who has fallen in love with Torazo, throws up her red floral kimono sleeve in self-defense as she recoils in fright. Her other sleeve is draped over the shoulder of Torazo, who stares suspiciously at the older samurai out of the corners of his eyes. At left, yakko or footman Chienai, in reality Yoshioka Kisanta, rushes forward with alarm, thrusting his hand out. From left, the actors are Otani Tomoemon, Iwai Shijaku, Sawamura Tossho, and Ichimura Shikan. A great design with large expressive figures, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono, and embossing on the white hair and white kimono trim. A handsome image.
