Hakamadare Yasusuke Sneaking up on Minamoto no Yorimitsu, 1875

Comments - Terrific scene of the villain Hakamadare Yasusuke sneaking up on Minamoto no Yorimitsu as he plays the flute while strolling at night. The nobleman plays his instrument as he walks, unaware of the Hakamadare at left, who grips a sword behind his back, ready to attack. Hakamadare wears a black fur vest over a red brocade kimono and suit of armor, his long hair pulled back into a low ponytail tied with yarn, his shorter hair sticking up atop his head. At right, the young Kidomaru has been lying in wait beneath an ox skin to attack Yorimitsu. He lifts the skin of the animal by the horn as he clenches a knife between his teeth, glaring at the nobleman with an enraged expression. At upper left, a cloud drifts across a full moon, and autumn grasses can be seen in silhouette against the night sky. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Bando Hikosaburo, and Nakamura Shikan. An intriguing, atmospheric subject, with large expressive figures, fine line work in the hair, and burnishing on the black vest. A great design.
