Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kaminari Shokuro, 1857

Comments - Great portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the otokodate or street knight Kaminari Shokuro, one of the five chivalrous men in kabuki plays. He stands in front of a garden with his feet spread firmly apart, his arm extending from beneath his kimono as he rests his hand on the hilt of his sword. His robe features a tie-dyed pattern at top and bottom with a geometric print band in the center, tied with a yellow obi. A variety of flowers bloom behind a decorative fence beneath two large shaped panels with decorative designs. An attractive design with a beautifully detailed setting, nicely detailed with cloth embossing on the background of the shaped panels.

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown
