Series; Dashing Men Who Have Taken Alternate Names

Nakamura Fukusuke I as Igami Gonta, 1859 - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Igami Gonta, a young man whose father owns a sushi shop. Gonta hides money taken from his mother in a tub of sushi, while his father has hidden the severed head of an enemy for identification in another tub. When Gonta retrieves the tub to steal the money, he accidentally takes the tub with the head in it. Here, he looks ahead with an angry frown, his brows furrowed, on sleeve of his geometric print kimono pushed down to the waist to reveal a black undergarment tied with a red sash. A dotted cloth is twisted and wrapped about his head. A bold checked pattern in the background adds graphic impact. A great design.
