Comments - Lovely illustration of the Akashi Bathhouse in a scene from the "Tale of Genji." At right, a woman peers over the edge of a railing around an opening above a well, a pail suspended from a rope over a pulley overhead. In the center, a beauty carries a fine lacquer tray covered with a red brocade cloth, a young girl following behind her with a lacquer basin. At left, a beauty in an informal blue and white cotton robe patterned with Genji symbols and waterwheels fans herself, steam rising from a deep bath in the room behind her. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting and furnishings, the view framed by a blossoming cherry tree at right. Includes burnishing in the black kimono.
