Sumo Wrestlers Arguing, 1850

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of two sumo wrestlers arguing, featuring Ichimura Uzaemon XI as Akitsushima Kuniemon and Arashi Kichisaburo III as Onigadake Doemon. At right, Onigadake raises a sandal above his head as a weapon, grimacing angrily at his companion. He wears a furry gray coat over a striped kimono, a white cloth knotted about his neck. At left, the younger Akitsushima smiles slightly as he watches him out of the corners of his eyes. He grips a pipe in one hand as he pushes up his kimono sleeve. A tobacco set, tobacco pouch, and pipe case rest on the floor nearby. At upper left, the objects tied to a circle of rope are dried bonito chips. A handsome design with a nicely detailed interior setting.
