Tomoe Gozen at the Battle of Awazu, 1893 - Fantastic triptych showing the legendary woman warrior Tomoe Gozen on horseback, engaging her enemy Hatakeyama Shigetada during the Battle of Awazu. Her dappled horse rears up on its hind legs as she rides past her opponent, a torn plate of armor gripped between her teeth. Shigetada holds the other end of the armor, the laces flapping. Tomoe wears full armor and a tall black court cap, her long hair flowing loose over her shoulders. She carries a naginata, and has a bow slung over the sword hanging at her waist. The lively horses are wonderfully detailed, as are the armor and weapons. A great dynamic image and a terrific subject for a samurai enthusiast. Includes burnishing on Tomoe's black fur scabbard and cap.
