Iwafuji Berating Onoe - Handsome scene from a tale about the junior lady-in-waiting, Onoe. The jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji replaced a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a sandal, then pretended to discover it. Here, she berates Onoe, waving the sandal above her head accusingly with an ugly sneer. She wears a striking black kimono patterned with wisteria. At left, Onoe looks up with a suspicious expression. In the center, her loyal maid Ohatsu watches Iwafuji slyly out of the corners of her eyes, an elegant green lacquer document box in her hand. The shamed Onoe then commits suicide, and Ohatsu avenges her death by killing Iwafuji. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho II, Sawamura Tanosuke III, and Bando Hikosaburo V. Nice expressive figures, with cherry blossoms framing the blue sky above.
