Young Falconer Kakemono, circa 1843 - 1845

Comments - Handsome kakemono or vertical diptych of a young samurai with a falcon perched on his gloved hand. He grins as he looks to the side, a slender wooden crop held in his hand. The curious bird looks overhead with a keen eye, watching for prey. Falconry was a popular sport among the upper class during the Tokugawa period, a symbol of status and nobility. A terrific image of this favorite pastime of the samurai.
