Sakanoue Tamuramaro in Battle

Comments - Great depiction of the Heian era general Sakanoue Tamuramaro in battle. He sits astride a dappled horse at left, his bow in hand after having just fired an arrow. A retainer at his side holds a red banner that flutters in the wind. In the center, a samurai on a black horse grimaces angrily as he watches the fighting along the edge of the water and atop the low cliff at right. Shafts of light stream across the sky sending a supernatural hail of arrows towards the enemies. A fantastic design with wonderful detail and a striking natural setting.
