Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yaoya Oshichi at Her Father's Store

Comments - Great kabuki scene from one of the many plays based on the true story of Yaoya Oshichi, a 17th century teenager who sought refuge in a temple after a fire. While there, she fell in love with a monk, and in order to see him again, she set a fire that ended up destroying a large part of Edo. In the center, the beauty stands inside her father's greengrocer (yaoya) shop, smiling happily as she looks over her shoulder at the maidservant Osugi, who holds her hands out before her. A shelf behind her holds stacks of jars, while bins at left are full of produce. At left, a young man stands outside the doorway holding a kokyu, an instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. The actors include Bando Shuka I as Oshichi and Fujikawa Kayu III as Osugi. Wonderful detail in the interesting setting.
