Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Tokaido Yaizunohara, 1935

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Peaceful winter landscape of a snowy farmyard at Yaizu in the early morning, the sun flooding the sky with rosy pink light. A bridge arches over the water in the foreground, but the waterwheel alongside the building at left is silent. A crow perches high on a bare branch framing the scene at left, a nice detail. Beautifully colored and shaded.

Publisher - Doi, later edition from original blocks

Artist - Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949)
