Five Street Knights by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Five Street Knights

Comments - Rare, complete five-panel print depicting five otokodate or street knights, a classic kabuki theme about five dandy thieves commonly known as "Gonin Otoko," which was the basis of many plays. Each man wears a kimono shaded from violet to blue green, with a different border of white motifs, and a white cloth over his shoulder or wrapped around the neck. The men exchange angry scowls and frowns as they look at each other. Text runs across the top above bands of pink and green cherry blossoms. The actors include Ichikawa Hakuen in the left panel and Ichimura Kakitsu second from left. Nice expressive figures in this interesting five-panel design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 48 5/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Five separate panels, four backed with paper. Large loss at corner, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight rubbing, spotting, light horizontal and vertical lines where backing papers meet. Please see photos for details.
