Aoto Zoshi Hana no Nishiki-e, 1862 - Great kabuki scene from "Aoto Zoshi Hana no Nishiki-e," a drama about five otokodate or street knights, who are a gang of thieves led by Nippon Daemon. In a complicated plot, they attempt to extort money from an elderly cloth merchant. At right, Daemon sits atop a wooden chest as he threatens the proprietor Hamamatsuya Kobei with a sword. The terrified man looks up from the letter he is reading with alarm. Benten Kozo, another gang member disguised as a beauty stands behind him. At left, Tadanobu Rihei leans forward with an angry expression, a box tucked under his arm. Bolts of fabric filled the shelves along the back of the store. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Ichikawa Danzo VI, Ichimura Utaemon XIII, and Seki Sanjuro III. Expressive figures in a wonderfully detailed setting.
