Courtesans with a Long Letter, 1860

Comments - Great kabuki triptych featuring two courtesans holding the ends of a long letter. At left, Kikunoi wears a striking black kimono patterned with a dragon and flames, smiling a she looks down at the shinzo or apprentice courtesan Mitsuhama, who has fallen to the ground beneath the message. At right, Kaoru grins happily as she looks over her shoulder, holding her sleeve to her chin. Her kimono is shaded from violet to white and bordered with autumn flowers and maple leaves. Colorful maple leaves also frame the dark sky overhead. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III, Bando Mitsugoro VI, and Nakamura Shikan IV. A handsome design with soft shading and handsome woodgrain impression on the background.
