Scene from Kotoba no hana momiji no Yozakari, 1849

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Kotoba no hana momiji no Yozakari." At lower left, a young boy frowns as he holds out his closed fist in an almost accusing manner, a staff in his other hand. At right, a man wearing a kimono depicting a scene from Hell with demons, flames, and Emma-o, the king of the underworld, stares back at the child with a worried expression. The seated fellow in the center watches him closely with an unhappy frown, his robe decorated with daimyo's ships on undulating waves. The crowd of men gathered around watch with mixed emotions, some grinning and others alarmed. The actors include Seki Sanjuro III as Hantoki Kurobei, Nakamura Utaemon IV as Honchomaru Tsunagoro, Sawamura Gennosuke III as Kawanoya Jubei, Ichimura Kuroemon as Kanda Yokichi, Nakamura Sagisuke as Kanto Karoku and Otokodate. An intriguing image with a nicely detailed setting.
