Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Empress Visiting the Tokyo Reserve Hospital, 1895

Comments - Interesting scene of the Meiji Empress visiting the Tokyo Reserve Hospital to cheer men wounded during the Sino-Japanese War. The Empress wears the latest western fashions, including a bustled skirt and a bonnet topped with flowers and feathers. At left, some of the patients bow respectfully atop their beds, while the Emperor and other dignitaries and ladies-in-waiting watch from the right. An unusual subject, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black uniforms. Only the second time we've seen this design.

Artist - Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 27" + margins as shown
