Asahina Battling Demons in Hell - Fantastic depiction of the warrior Asahina, a popular figure from the Tale of the Soga Brothers, battling Emma-o, the god of the underworld. The strongman snatches the demons' ornate cap from his head, grabbing hold of his beard under his chin. Emma-o looks up in fright, surprised while poring over a book and scrolls of souls to judge. A horned demon at right scratches his head as he points at his master, his mouth open in terror. Above him, a horrified man scrambles to get out of the way. At top center is the karmic mirror of hell which reflects the true events of each soul's life. Two disembodied leering faces watch at upper left, floating on a purple cloud. Asahina is easily recognizable by his unusual red "monkey makeup" and flared sideburns, along with his trademark kimono patterned with cranes in flight. A terrific design with wonderful detail and lively color set off by a black background. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the mirror.
