Series; Ashikaga Silk Hand-dyed in Purple: The Twelve Months

The Third Month (Yayoi), 1858 - Terrific illustration of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, at the seashore, his pleasure boat beached at low tide. He leans against the roof of the cabin, taking a toothpick from his mouth and grinning at the beauty carrying a basket of shellfish. At lower left, a woman scrambles after an octopus, one of its tentacles wrapping about her arm. Her companion watches with amusement, holding her hand to her chin as she smiles, a basket of clams tucked under her arm. The beach is crowded with vendors and fishermen, as well as people gathering shellfish, with a few ships anchored in the bay beyond. A wonderful triptych with a beautiful panoramic view of the bustling shore, the peak of Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. Lovely detail, including embossing on the white kimono collars and trim and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
