Comments - Fantastic illustration of Daikoku, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, drawing a lottery during a celebration for the New Year, which was the Year of the Rat in 1876. The smiling deity holding a handful of red strings, which a number of rats dressed in court clothing are tugging on, jostling and pushing each other. In the center, another rat carries a large radish on his back with two umbrellas tied to it. A woman at right holds out a tray piled with gold coins and sweets, an altar behind her stacked with all manner of gifts, including a branch of red coral in a pot, bolts of cloth, a yakko-dako or man kite at lower right, and a straw-wrapped sake cask. At upper left, the rest of the Lucky Gods enjoy the festivities, Ebisu drinking sake as Benzaiten plays the shamisen, watching as Fukurokuju dances about in a rat costume. A terrific design.
