Morning Mist at Mishima

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1919 Goyo Studio Edition

Hiroshige’s Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido - In 1832, Hiroshige first traveled from his home in Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. The journey was an eye opening and life changing experience for him. As an urban man of Edo he had experienced life mainly in the capital. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made on his journey. Hiroshige's Tokaido prints are an opportunity to be transported back in time to see this world as Hiroshige did in the shadow of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Hashiguchi Goyo Studio 1919 Hoeido Tokaido - Goyo is one of the most famous artists of 20th century Japanese woodblocks. He produced his own designs, and exceptionally high-quality reprints of Edo era masterworks by artists such as Hiroshige, Utamaro, Hokusai, and Harunobu.

This beautiful Hiroshige Hoeido Tokaido series was published by Goyo in 1919, shortly before the artist's death in 1920. See examples below of publisher's label (not included) and the Goyo studio red seal (stamped in the margin of each print) certifying the print is from the Goyo studio.

Sparing no expense, these prints feature finely carved details, fresh color, and soft bokashi shading, and are printed on high quality, handmade paper. These prints are some of the rarest and most valuable woodblock reprints. Goyo printed a very low number of these sets, and they are almost impossible to find on the market now. This is the first group we have offered in nearly ten years. Don’t miss out, we don’t know when we’ll have these again.
