Takechi Mitsuhide and His Son, Jujiro Mitsunaga, 1868

Comments - Terrific kabuki print of the warrior Takechi Mitsuhide glaring angrily at his son, Jujiro Mitsunaga. At top center, Mitsuhide wears a fine suit of armor and grips a fan, his blue stage makeup adding to his fierce appearance. The young samurai reacts with alarm, swiftly turning his head and raising his sword in defense. He has just come from a battle, with arrows protruding from his clothing and plates torn from his armor. The two women flanking the samurai look up with surprise, their mouths agape. At left, a white-haired woman smiles slyly as she tilts her head, and a scalloped inset at right portrays Mashiba Hisayoshi. Terrific detail in the expressive faces and hairstyles, with embossing on the white kimono trim and hair. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro as the mother Satsuki, Onoe Kikujiro as Hatsugiku, Sawamura Tossho, Nakamura Shikan, Otani Tomoemon, and Bando Hikosaburo at Hisayoshi. A great design with large figures set off by the deep blue background and black border.
