The Subscription List, 1875

Comments - Fantastic scene from the famous kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). Yoshitsune and his men, including his loyal retainer Benkei, have disguised themselves as monks to cross the border. The aristocrat Togashi, shown here in a blue robe patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. However, Togashi is suspicious of the young porter at left, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). To prove otherwise, Benkei gestures angrily at the young man with his fan. Yoshitsune sits meekly with his head down as Benkei berates and abuses him. A great dramatic triptych with expressive faces and excellent detail, including burnishing on the black caps and embossing on the white pompoms and trim of Benkei's robe. The actors include Iwai Hanshiro as Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei, and Ichikawa Sadanji as Togashi. A great scene from this popular play.
